After graduating from William and Mary College, he went on to study medicine at the University of Pennsylvania. In 1801 he received his M.D. degree and moved to Georgia. In Georgia Bibb became interested in politics. He was both a Georgia congressman and senator. Also, he was a U.S. Senator between 1813 and 1816. Eventually, Bibb became the Governor of Alabama, the office in which he died in 1820. His successor was his son Thomas Bibb. William Wyatt Bibb ALS, Ms 2705 (M), includes one letter of 25 June 1816 written by Bibb and addressed, possibly, to Senator Charles Tait of Georgia. In the letter Bibb discusses the public outrage stemming from his congressional proposal to fix the salaries of senators and congressmen, an idea regarded unethical and illegal by the nation. In 1816, as a result of the controversy, Bibb was forced to resign his Senate seat. Also included in William Wyatt Bibb ALS are Bibb's ideas concerning the replacement of Col. Benjamin Hawkins, Indian Agent for the southeastern United States, who had died in office. Black Collection contains the papers, research notes, correspondence, printed material, etc. of Col. Black (U.S. Army, Ret.). An avid horticulturalist, Black began the effort to save the Leconte family gardens at Uoodmanston plantation. The first part of this collection, the Leconte—Moodmanston Project Section, consists of 13 1/S boxes of materials relating to the gardens, the Lecontes, garden club activities and Black's efforts at conservation. The Botanical and Floral Garden at Uoodmanston Mere designed by Louis Leconte, father of the famous Leconte brothers, pioneers in the sciences in the United States. In July 1971, Clermont Lee, a coastal naturalist, introduced Black to the gardens and their plight. The family's home at Moodmanston had been destroyed many years earlier, but Black hoped that much of the vegetation could be rescued from the growth that had covered it. Black found some remains of the garden's species in November, including a rare camellia japonica. He immediately moved to stop clear-cutting of the Uoodmanston lands by its lessor the Brunswick Pulp and Paper Co. A provisional committee formed in January 197S under the sponsorship of the Liberty County Historical Society. The gardens mere placed in the National Register of Historic Places in 1973 and in 1977 the paper company signed their lease over to the Nature Conservancy. The ecological and historical value of Leconte-Uoodmanston caused Black to devote over a decade of work to its benefit. The correspondence ends in 1985, with plans for Uoodmanston very sketchy and Black's health failing. Black's love of natural history is also apparent in the General History Section of the collection. These last three boxes consist of materials on a ^ide range of topics, many centering on east Tennessee where the Black's lived for a few years. c The Garden Club of Georgia On June 6, 1977, in a ceremony on the site of the Louis LeConte Botanical and Floral Garden, Woodmanston Plantation lands, Liberty County, Georgia, title to a 63.8 acre tract was legally transferred to the Garden Club of Georgia, Inc. The Brunswick Pulp and Paper Company donated its lease and option equities in the tract while the heirs to the Estate of the late Mr. C.B. Jones conveyed ownership of the land. The Nature Conservancy acted as in termediary in the transaction. The LeContC'Woodmanston Project is a com prehensive undertaking, with plans to be ac complished in phases, according to a Master Plan, to preserve and partially restore the 63.8 acre central area of the original 3,354 acre LeContC'Woodmanston Plantation. The goal is to construct a series of horticultural and formal gardens as a Living Memorial to reflect great significance and interest inherent in the LeConte family and it's ancestral home in Low Country Georgia. This project, when completed shall be an important tourist at traction, aesthetically and educationally. Woodmanston Plantation was founded in 1760 by the brothers William and John Eatton LeConte, descendants of a French Huguenot emigre. In 1810, Louis LeConte, the son of John Eat ton LeConte, came into possession of LeConte- Woodmanston and married Ann Quarterman of Liberty County, Georgia. His life, from 1810 un til his death in 1838, was devoted to his family and it's Woodmanston home. Here Louis and Ann Leconte founded the Georgia branch of the LeConte family which contributed to the State's most distinguished citizens. In the words of the late Dr. James Stokes, "77MZ,eCoHM./<3?n:7y)>ro- &oo&, J949J Two of Louis and Ann LeConte's sons, John and Joseph, were among the principal founders of the University of California at Berkeley. John became its first President and Joseph a famous Professor of Geology there. Under Louis LeConte's careful custodianship, Woodmanston prospered as a highly productive Up-River Rice Plantation. Louis LeConte dedicated himself to the aesthetic and botanical aspects of LeConte- Woodmanston as well as to its utilitarian produc tivity. He esfaM'yAa? fAere a BoMHKXi/ on;? The other specialty of the Garden be ing an outstanding collection of some 30 specimens of bulb-type plants. In an article published in the November 22, 1936 issue of TAe SaponnaA Morm'ng Afetus, Mr. George D. Lowe, a horticulturist of Brunswick, Georgia, wrote: "C7M%MMf:'cMa&/y fAe LeCcnfe Gor&n t'n ere After the death of Louis LeConte in 1838, his beloved Botanical and Floral Garden was almost totally neglected. LeConte^Woodmanston con tinued to produce rice through the year 1864. But then the depredations wrought by Sherman's Calvary and the general unrest which thereafter prevailed put a stop to rice culture there. The last of the LeContes, Mrs. Jane LeConte Harden, was forced to abandon Woodmanston and join her brothers, John and Joseph, in California in 1869. Now all that remains as reminders of the Hal cyon Days of LeConte-Woodmanston are a lone Camellia tree, a stand of old-fashioned pink Crepe Myrtles, and one very old Sabal Palmet to, which helped to mark the site of the Wood manston Plantation House. With support of Georgians and other in terested individuals and groups, which this pro ject certainly merits, The Garden Club of Georgia, and Trustees of the Leconte- Woodmanston Project, over a period of years will recreate a living shrine of significant beauty and interest at the LeConte^Kbodmanston Site, which will be a continuing source of justifiable pride for all.
